Descript costs $16 a month on Hobbyist, $24 on Creator, and $50 on Business, all billed annually and charged per person. Most podcasters who edit their own show should buy Hobbyist. Move to Creator only if you publish video in 4K, finish your mix in a DAW, or keep running out of hours.
Key takeaways
- Descript Hobbyist costs $16 a month billed annually or $24 month to month, and includes 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month.
- Descript Creator costs $24 a month billed annually or $35 month to month, with 30 media hours, 800 AI credits, and 4K export.
- Descript’s free plan gives 60 media minutes a month but only 100 AI credits one time, and it watermarks video exports at 720p.
- Descript sells extra media hours and AI credits only on Creator and Business, so a Hobbyist who runs out has to wait for the reset or upgrade.
- Descript refunds a plan only if you ask within 48 hours of the invoice date, which matters most on a yearly plan.
How much does Descript cost per month?
Between $0 and $65 per person, depending on the plan and how you pay. Every figure below comes from Descript’s pricing page, checked on September 24, 2026. The annual column is the monthly rate when you commit for a year.
| Plan | Billed annually | Month to month | Media hours | AI credits | Video export |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 1 a month | 100, one time | 720p, watermarked |
| Hobbyist | $16 | $24 | 10 a month | 400 a month | 1080p, no watermark |
| Creator | $24 | $35 | 30 a month | 800 a month | 4K, no watermark |
| Business | $50 | $65 | 40 a month | 1,500 a month | 4K, no watermark |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Sized to the team | Sized to the team | 4K |
Paid prices are per person, per month. A year of Hobbyist works out to $192, Creator to $288, and Business to $600. The page advertises savings of up to 35 percent for paying yearly, and the math works out to 33 percent on Hobbyist, 31 on Creator, and 23 on Business.

What does each Descript plan get a podcaster?
Free is a test drive. You get 60 media minutes a month, which is one episode at most, and 100 AI credits that never refill. Studio Sound, filler-word removal, and Underlord all show up as “Limited.” Video exports carry a watermark at 720p. You do not need a card to sign up.
Hobbyist at $16 is the plan built for someone editing their own podcast. Ten media hours a month, 400 AI credits, and 1080p exports without a watermark. The comparison table on Descript’s page marks the tools podcasters use as included here: Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Shorten Word Gaps, Remove Retakes, show-note drafting, and custom voice clones for patching a flubbed line. One seat, 100 GB of storage.
Creator at $24 triples the hours to 30 and doubles the credits to 800. It adds 4K export, 1 TB of storage, the full stock media library, and top ups when you run dry. For audio people, the underrated line is timeline export to Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, Logic, and Reaper, which Hobbyist does not get. A Creator team can grow to three people, each billed separately.
Business at $50 is a team plan: 40 hours, 1,500 credits, up to five seats, dubbing into 30 languages, brand controls, and support with an SLA. A solo podcaster has no reason to be here. Enterprise is quoted by sales.
How do media hours and AI credits work?
They are two separate meters, and both reset when your billing cycle renews. Unused time does not roll over. Media hours count everything you upload or record in Descript, whether you transcribe it or not. AI credits pay for the AI tools: Studio Sound, filler-word removal, Underlord, AI speech, and the rest.
We watched the meters move on a free account. Uploading a 2-minute-40-second test file took the media allowance from 60 minutes to 57, and the credit count read 95 of 100 before we had edited a single word. Both numbers sit in the top bar, beside the Upgrade button.

Credits go further than they sound for a podcast. Descript’s help center caps Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words at 30 credits per file, however long the episode. Running both on one episode costs 60 credits at most, so Hobbyist’s 400 covers six episodes with room left over. Underlord is the wild card. Every chat message spends a few credits, and Descript says plainly that its costs vary from request to request.
Hours are the tighter meter. A weekly 45-minute solo show uses about three hours a month, well inside Hobbyist. An interview show is different. Descript’s help center says a Rooms recording is charged once for the session length, not per participant. It makes no such promise for separate tracks you upload from another recorder, so budget as if every track counts.
What happens when you run out?
On Creator and Business, you buy a top up. On Hobbyist, you cannot. Descript’s top-up page says they are sold only on Creator and Business, so a Hobbyist who hits the ceiling mid-month either waits for the reset or upgrades. That is the single biggest catch in the lineup.
Top-up prices as of September 2026:
| Top up | Price | Unit cost |
|---|---|---|
| 5 media hours | $25 | $5 an hour |
| 20 media hours | $80 | $4 an hour |
| 50 media hours | $150 | $3 an hour |
| 350 AI credits | $35 | $0.10 a credit |
| 1,000 AI credits | $80 | $0.08 a credit |
| 4,000 AI credits | $200 | $0.05 a credit |
Top ups are spent only after the monthly allowance is gone, they last 12 months from purchase, and they are not refundable. For a Hobbyist, the choice at the ceiling is the $8-a-month step up to Creator on annual billing, which triples your hours. Descript’s own advice is the same: if you top up most months, upgrade.
Can you record a podcast in Descript?
Yes. Descript Rooms records remote sessions with up to 10 participants, and every plan gets some recording time: 2 hours on Free, then 5, 15, and 25 hours a month on Hobbyist, Creator, and Business. Each session saves a separate cloud backup, and a guest whose upload stalls can resume it for up to 7 days afterward.
Rooms time also draws on your media hours, since recordings count as media. If remote capture quality is the thing you are paying for, Riverside is still the tool built around it, and our Riverside vs Descript comparison covers how the two split the job. What Riverside costs on its own is in our Riverside pricing breakdown.
Is there a Descript discount for students, educators, or nonprofits?
Yes, but you have to ask. The FAQ on Descript’s pricing page says students, educators, and nonprofits can apply through a form, and it does not publish the rate.
How do you cancel Descript, and can you get a refund?
Cancel from App Settings (Command or Control plus comma), then the Plan tab, then Change plan, then Downgrade to Free. Pick a reason, click Cancel subscription, and keep going until the confirmation message appears. If you own more than one Drive, pick the right one first, because each Drive is billed separately.
You keep the paid plan until the end of the billing term, then drop to Free with your projects intact. Any unused top-up balance stays on the account but cannot be spent on Free.
The refund window is short. Descript’s refund policy allows plan refunds within 48 hours of the invoice date, and there are no prorated refunds for unused time. Buy a yearly plan on day one, change your mind on day three, and the money is gone. Extra editor seats get a 7-day window. Top ups get none.
One more trap for longtime users: if you are on a legacy plan, leaving it is permanent. You cannot switch back later.

Which Descript plan should a podcaster buy?
Hobbyist, billed annually, for almost everyone who edits their own audio show. The tools that save a podcaster time are all there: cutting by deleting words, filler removal, and Studio Sound. Ten hours covers a weekly solo show with plenty to spare.

Buy Creator if any of these is true: your podcast is also a 4K YouTube video, you hand the edit to Audition or Pro Tools for the final mix, or you upload two or three long tracks per episode and will blow past 10 hours. If one month runs long, Creator lets you buy 5 more hours for $25 instead of stopping work.
Skip Business unless several people edit in one Drive. And if you are unsure, pay monthly for the first month. The 48-hour refund window will not rescue a yearly plan you regret, while switching from monthly to annual later applies immediately, with the unused time credited toward the new plan.
Is Descript worth it?
If editing is the step that stops you publishing, yes. Deleting a sentence in a transcript is faster than finding it in a waveform, and filler removal turns a half-hour hunt into one click. That is what the money buys.
Three things count against it. Pricing is per person, and Hobbyist is a one-seat plan, so a co-host who also edits pushes you to two Creator seats at $48 a month. The AI credit system is hard to predict once you lean on Underlord. And Hobbyist has no overflow valve. For a show that needs a few trims a month, a free editor does the job and Descript is money you do not need to spend yet. If you are still pricing out the whole setup, our breakdown of what it costs to start a podcast puts Descript in context.
Remember that Descript edits. It does not host. You still need a podcast host to publish the feed, and our guide to choosing a podcast host covers that half.
Try Descript free first
The free plan needs no card and gives you an hour of media, enough to edit one real episode and see whether transcript editing clicks for you. Start with Descript’s free plan, then move to Hobbyist when the watermark and the one-time credit pool run out. Just know the $16 price assumes a yearly commitment you can only undo within 48 hours.
FAQ
Does Descript have a free plan? Yes. It includes 60 media minutes a month and 100 AI credits that do not refill, with 720p watermarked video exports. It is enough to test the editor, not to run a show.
Is Descript cheaper if you pay yearly? Yes. Hobbyist drops from $24 to $16 a month, Creator from $35 to $24, and Business from $65 to $50. The catch is the 48-hour refund window on the full yearly charge.
Does Descript charge per user? Yes, every paid plan is priced per person. Hobbyist is one seat, Creator scales to three, and Business to five, each added seat billed separately. Each seat also adds media hours and credits to the shared pool.
Do unused Descript media hours roll over? No. Media hours and AI credits reset at each renewal. Only purchased top ups carry over, for up to 12 months.
