What Counts as a Podcast Download? (The IAB Standard)
Last updated: August 2026
A podcast download counts when a real listener requests at least 60 seconds of your episode (or one megabyte, whichever is smaller), the request is not a bot, and the same IP and device combination has not already been counted in the past 24 hours. That is the IAB Tech Lab v2.2 standard, and it is the number sponsors trust. Anything looser is a vanity count.
What is the IAB download standard?
The Interactive Advertising Bureau publishes the measurement rulebook the whole industry leans on, currently version 2.2. It exists because “download” used to mean whatever each host wanted it to mean, which made cross-show numbers useless to advertisers.
Three filters define a counted download. One, a minimum threshold: at least 60 seconds of the file, or one megabyte, whichever comes first, has to be requested. A listener who taps play and bails after two seconds does not count. Two, bot filtering: known crawlers, bots, and automated requests get stripped out, because servers get pinged constantly by things that are not people. Three, deduplication: within a rolling 24-hour window, the same IP address paired with the same user agent counts once, no matter how many times it pings. Play the same episode five times on one phone in an afternoon and that is one download.

A host that certifies to IAB 2.2 is applying all three. One that reports raw server hits is handing you a bigger, softer number that a sponsor will discount on sight. Once you trust the number, the next question is what a good download number actually looks like.

Why do download numbers differ between hosts?
Because not every host counts the same way, even though most claim IAB compliance. The gap usually lives in how aggressively they filter and how they dedupe.
Say you move hosts and your numbers drop 15 percent overnight with the same audience. Nothing went wrong. The new host is probably filtering bots harder or deduping on a stricter window, so you are finally seeing the honest figure. This trips up creators mid-migration constantly, and it is why comparing your raw total against another show’s raw total is close to meaningless unless you know both are measuring the same way.
The safe move is to treat IAB certification as the baseline requirement, not a bonus. When a host advertises “IAB Certified” or “IAB v2.x compliant,” that is the version of your number a sponsor will accept. If a host is cagey about how it counts, that is a flag. We cover which hosts report honest analytics in how to read your podcast analytics, and what that number is worth once a sponsor is quoting you a rate is in podcast CPM and ad rates explained.
Does a download mean someone listened?
No, and this is the honest limit of the metric. A download means the file was requested past the threshold. It does not prove a human sat through the episode.
Apps pre-download episodes for offline listening, which can register a download for a show that never gets played. On the flip side, streaming counts too under the standard once enough of the file is pulled. So “downloads” is really “qualified requests,” a strong proxy for reach but not a guarantee of attention. That is why smart shows read downloads alongside consumption data, the percentage of the episode actually listened to, which most good hosts now report. Downloads tell you how far you reached. Consumption tells you whether the episode held. You want both, and we get into that in how to read your podcast analytics.
FAQ
How many seconds counts as a podcast download? Under IAB v2.2, at least 60 seconds of the episode (or one megabyte, whichever is smaller) must be requested for it to count. Shorter requests are discarded.
Why did my downloads drop after switching hosts? The new host likely filters bots or deduplicates more strictly. Your real audience did not shrink, you are just seeing a cleaner, IAB-aligned number.
Do streams count as downloads? Yes, once enough of the file is requested to clear the threshold. The standard measures qualified requests, whether the listener streams or downloads for later.
Is a download the same as a listen? No. A download means the file was requested past the threshold, not that someone finished the episode. Check consumption or completion data for actual listening.
